Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This position is responsible for timely reviews of projects in accordance with state and federal laws for the protection of historic properties; educates public and government officials about protective laws; reviews projects submitted by property owners, federal and state agencies and local governments through the Kansas Review & Compliance system and analyzes their potential to affect the state’s archeological resources; reviews and evaluates reports for conformance with the Kansas SHPO’s Guide to Archeological Survey, Assessment and Reports .


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
This is a permanent, benefit eligible position that serves as the Archeological Reviewer for Review & Compliance programs administered by the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), a department within the Kansas Historical Society. The SHPO works in collaboration with federal agency partner, the National Park Service, and many other state and federal partners to administer state and federal historic preservation programs. This position will have primary duties involving coordination of SHPO responsibilities for federal undertakings involving ground disturbing projects pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, including but not limited to, review of initial project submissions, determination of eligibility, review of cultural resources management reports and other documentation, and the development of agreement documents with appropriate mitigation in consultation with stakeholders. The archaeological reviewer will occasionally participate in the Section 106 process for buildings and bridges, assist with trainings and outreach activities, review National Register of Historic Places nominations when expertise is needed, and assist with archeological field work when appropriate. Qualifications

  • Education :

Licensing & Certification : Employee must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards in the area of Archeology (36 CFR 61, Appendix A).

Minimum Qualifications : The employee must possess skills necessary to provide excellent customer service.

Preferred Qualifications : Preference will be given to candidates who exhibit experience reviewing project proposals and site reports.
